Fury Following Brown’s Transport Claims

roads_problems.png
Gordon Brown has insisted that Lancashire is receiving all the transport funding it needs, during a question session at 10 Downing Street.

Replying to a question from the Lancashire Evening Post, Bumbling Brown astounded local Conservatives by suggesting that not only is Lancashire’s transport network getting all the funding it needs, but that our roads are getting better.

The Prime Minster said: “I don’t think it is true to say that transport spending has been skewed to one particular area.

“In every part of the country we are spending (on) transport according to the needs of these different areas.”

According to the Treasury, the North West received £276 per person in transport funding, £43 less than the UK average and £338 less than in London.

Eric Ollerenshaw, Lancaster and Fleetwood’s Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, said:

“This astonishing statement by the Prime Minister shows how out of touch the Government is with reality”.

Lancashire Conservatives have pledged £47 million of improvements to the County’s roads and pavements if they take control of the County in next May’s local elections.

The improvements were pledged while the Conservatives presented their alternative budget to full council at County Hall.

The extra money would be financed by a combination of existing sources and would not lead to an increase of Council Tax.

An amount of £900,000 would also be set aside for cleaning and improving gullies to reduce the risk of flooding in residential areas.

Come on Eric. As you well know, in their alternative budget the Conservatives on LCC proposed BORROWING £47 million. Your claim that Tory road building plans come from within the current budget is a total lie and you know it.
If you can`t tell the truth on this, why should the voters of Lancaster & Fleetwood believe you on anything?

Perhaps you should learn not to bandy words like “lie” so quickly – just calm down and read the budget proposals more carefully – it didn’t as you claim include £47 million of borrowings.

It actual says :

“The three year projection includes a contribution of £47.1 million to the capital program funded by a mix of prudential borrowing, revenue and contributions from reserves, £7 million to be spent on general capital schemes and £40.1 million on highways structural maintenance designed to bring the condition of Lancashire’s roads and footpaths back to an acceptable standard.

“As a result the forecast highways liability claims are reduced by £0.400 million in 2009/2010 and £455 million in 2010/2011.”

So yes there will be some borrowing if needed, but the bulk will be from existing resources and savings including an estimated £400,000 in savings (officer figures) from accident claims against the Council due to the poor state the roads have been left in by your Labour Group!
