In a speech in Birmingham, David Cameron stressed the need for “the simple Conservative principles of good housekeeping” and outlined how government can live within its means.
He attacked Labour for putting Britain “on the wrong path” by having “splashed the cash like there’s no tomorrow”:
“After years of reckless spending under Labour, Britain needs good housekeeping from the Conservatives. We need to start living within our means.”
New Culture
David said a “whole new culture of government” was needed to control public spending, and he promised to:
- Reduce the long-term demands on the state, by tackling the causes of social problems
- Reform public services, by introducing greater accountability
- And make the public sector more efficient and transparent.
He ended by stressing that people can look forward to a brighter future with the Conservatives: “A low tax, competitive economy, with a high quality of life and the opportunity for everyone to make something of their life.”
