Eric welcomes PM’s plan for benefit cap

Eric Ollerenshaw, the Lancashire born and bred MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood, spoke out at this week’s Prime Minister’s question time to ask David Cameron about the Government’s plan for a cap on the amount of benefits that can be claimed by one household.

“I wanted to bring to the attention of the PM that the average household income in Lancashire is only just over the proposed benefits  cap of £26,000 which is in fact the equivalent to someone earning £35,000 before tax.”

“This is an income that many working families across Lancaster and Fleetwood would be only be too happy to receive and underlines the point that the whole system has got out of balance.”

“There will be  exemptions, such as for those who are making the right efforts to get back to work – those on Working Tax Credit – and those who are disabled, as well as for widows and war widows but it cannot be right that we end up paying for a benefits system that can make some people better off than working.”
