Miles Bennington handing the petition to the Leader of the Council.
In Spring 2008, your local Conservatives ran a petition calling on the Council to take action and help clean up the Primrose area of Lancaster. The campaign was successful and in April 2009 it was announced that four Primrose streets would be cleaned up.
Residents across Primrose had complained to their Conservative Representative, Miles Bennington, about the poor state of Dale Street and Prospect Street.
Road Maintenance
Many of the problems reported were due to poor road maintenance; cracked and uneven pavements, dilapidated speed humps and pot holes – all the responsibility of the Labour-run County Council.
Complaints were made about the poor state of the brick speed humps, which kept residents awake as cars clattered over them.
Street Cleaning
Other problems reported were the responsibility of the City Council; broken bottles, litter and – especially over the summer – weeds. Many residents also complained to Miles about refuse left in the back alleys.
After a walkabout in Primrose by Lancaster Conservatives, it was decided that a petition would help to draw the Council’s attention to the problems, and hopefully get something done.
Petition
During Spring 2008, Miles and your local Conservatives began collecting signatures in Primrose for a petition calling on the Council to roll out its ‘Street Pride’ scheme.
It was hoped that the scheme, which delivers minor road repairs and deep-cleans the pavements and gullies, would be carried out in Dale Street and Prospect Street before being rolled out across Primrose.
It was also hoped the City Council would put pressure on Lancashire County Council to have the speed bumps repaired.
The petition, with 110 signatures, was presented to the full Council at Morecambe Town Hall on 23rd July.
Thank you to all the Primrose residents who signed our petition. It might have taken nearly a year, but the Council has clearly agreed that Primrose needs a good clean-up!
Miles Bennington
In April 2009 it was announced that the Council’s ‘Street Pride’ scheme will be rolled into four Primrose streets over the next few months.
Prospect Street and Dale Street will be cleaned in July, while Eastham Street and Westham Street will be tackled in September.
Miles Bennington commented: “Thank you to all the Primrose residents who signed our petition. It might have taken nearly a year, but the Council has clearly agreed that Primrose needs a good clean-up! I am really pleased that four streets will be targeted this year.”
