Pride in Primrose: Miles Bennington and Roger Mace Following complaints from local residents in the Primrose area of Lancaster, your local Conservatives are calling on the Council to take action and help clean up the area.

Residents across Primrose had complained to their Conservative Representative, Miles Bennington, about the poor state of Dale Street and Prospect Street.

Road Maintenance

Many of the problems reported were due to poor road maintenance; cracked and uneven pavements, dilapidated speed humps and pot holes - all the responsibility of the Labour-run County Council.

The brick speed humps are in such a poor state of repair that residents are kept awake at night by cars clattering over them.

Street Cleaning

Other problems reported were the responsibility of the City Council; broken bottles, litter and - especially over the summer - weeds.  Many residents also complained to Miles about refuse left in the back alleys.

After a walkabout in Primrose by Lancaster Conservatives, it was decided that a petition would help to draw the Council’s attention to the problems, and hopefully get something done.

Petition

During Spring 2008, Miles and your local Conservatives began collecting signatures in Primrose for their petition calling on the Council to roll out its ‘Street Pride’ scheme.

It was hoped that the scheme, which carries out minor road repairs and deep-cleans the pavements and gullies, would be carried out in Dale Street and Prospect Street before being rolled out across Primrose.

It was also hoped the City Council would put pressure on Lancaster County Council to have the speed bumps repaired.

The petition, with 110 signatures, was presented to the full Council at Morecambe Town Hall on 23rd July.  At the meeting, Miles also called on Councillors to make a change to ‘Street Pride’ policy.

Thank you to everyone who signed the petition.  Hopefully the Council will sit up and take notice of Primrose in the future.

Miles Bennington

Currently, only Councillors are able to suggest roads for the scheme.  Miles has asked for residents to be able to suggest roads directly to the Council.

The Council’s Cabinet will discuss the possible change to policy at the next Cabinet meeting in September.

Miles said: “Thank you to everyone who signed the petition.  Hopefully the Council will sit up and take notice of Primrose in the future.”
