As a resident of Fleetwood who is struggling to find a graduate job but is not in a position to move away from home, I would like to see this project put into action. But more important for many people I have talked to is the incorporation of a bridge from Fleetwood to Knott End or Preesall. Since Fleetwood is now in a constituency with Lancaster it seems odd that people in Fleetwood have to travel south for 20 minutes before heading back up towards Knott End and into Lancaster. A bridge to Knott End would cut out 40 mins travel and allow me access to more companies offering graduate level employment.

There are so many other benefits; people on both sides of the bridge would benefit from public spending, it would bring more customers to Fleetwood Freeport which is in desperate need of the money to ensure the stores stay open and can continue to employ people, emergency services on both sides will have more access to more areas, the benefit of boosted employment would surely reduce the levels of crime in Fleetwood, which is currently above the national average. Both sides will also be able to offer any community/youth projects to more people, charities will also be able to help more people.

For example, there is a Help Direct service that covers the whole of Wyre but as it is based in Fleetwood, any outreach work involves a long drive. There is also an Age Concern office based in Fleetwood, they could help more people if they had access to Knott End.

The fact that a bridge to Knott End has not yet been built just doesn't make sense; as I step out of my home in Fleetwood I could look across the River Wyre and quite easily see people walking by, i'm sure that on a calm day I could shout across to somone standing on the other side and have a conversation, yet it takes 40 minutes to get there by car. Even if a tidal barrage doesn't get built, the benefits of a bridge would still make such a project worth while.

Fleetwood is a large town, there are about 30,000 people living on a relatively small and very closed off peninsula. The problems with unemployment cannot be solved without the building of a bridge to link us to the rest of the Wyre area.

And if funding is a problem, i'm sure businesses would see the benefit of attracting more customers and people wouldn't mind paying a toll to use the bridge until a portion of the cost is covered.

If plans for the project eventually fall down to a public decision, i'd like to see that every resident of Fleetwood is invited to give their opinion; it seems like I always hear about projects and plans being 'put to the people of Fleetwood', yet I have never been asked for my opinion on anything that happens in Fleetwood. And it's not through lack of looking for a way to give my opinion.

Dear Alice, thank you for your comments.

The website, www.wyretidalenergy.com/wyre-barrage-today is very useful in terms of background to the scheme. However there are many questions that need to be answered regarding and that is why we are calling for a proper technical investigation and also a full public consultation.

Dear Sirs,

I'd like to know whether a feasibility study has been undertaken and, if so, by whom?

What other studies have been undertaken?

What permits have been obtained?

What marine works, ie dredging, marine construction, reclamation are likely to be required, and what quantities/measurements.

Many thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

Alice Armstrong Evans

If the Duchy were prepared to release the Castle (perhaps the first question) then the prospect of Lancaster becoming an international visitor destination would have an incredible effect on the local economy. Has that effect ever been quantified and, if not, then would it form a suitable project for, say, an MSc thesis in economics? These quantitified benefits could then be weighed against the assessed costs of refurbuishment and maintenance. Obviously this still leads to questions about who would provide the investment and maintenance money. It is very interesting that a Medieval Building may play a part in the successful rehabilitation of offenders. It suggests that good and prestigious surroundings are to be valued and have a very positive effect even on those of criminal inclinations. But nonetheless the rehabilitation performance of the Castle may not be a sound economic argument for stiffling Lancaster's tourism potential.

I would have thought Labour Councillors followed our conference more carefully - this is what George Osborne said "We will preserve child benefit, winter fuel payments and free TV licenses. They are valued by millions."

!`m sure ALL readers of this site will notice that there is no mention of a Tory government maintaining the Winter Fuel Payments.

Thank you for your comment and I hope you are able to get tickets so you can put your questions to David Cameron.

People in Fleetwood keep telling me that they feel Fleetwood has been forgotten by this Government - well I hope this shows it hasn’t been forgotten by the Conservatives.
